Mortgage protection

Help your family remain secure in their home.

What it is

Mortgage protection generally uses life insurance to create a benefit connected to your family’s housing need. If the insured dies while the policy is active, the beneficiary may use the proceeds to pay the mortgage, continue monthly payments, or handle other household expenses. Unlike private mortgage insurance, this coverage is intended to protect your family—not the lender.

Policy features, eligibility, and benefits vary by carrier, state, and underwriting.

Often considered by

  • Homeowners
  • Families with a new mortgage
  • Households relying on one or two incomes

How it works

A level term policy can keep the same death benefit during the chosen term, while the mortgage balance declines.

The beneficiary usually receives the proceeds and decides how to use them unless the policy is structured differently.

Some policies may offer optional disability, critical illness, or return-of-premium features, which can increase cost and have separate rules.

Questions to consider

  • Current mortgage balance and years remaining
  • Whether one income could carry the payment
  • Other debts and household expenses
  • Coverage term, benefit amount, exclusions, and beneficiary choice
